Tae Kwon Do

Tae Kwon Do to the Korean people represents more than the mere physical use of skilled movements.  Translated from Korean, “Tae literally means to jump or kick or smash with the foot.  “Kwon” denotes a fist, primarily to punch or destroy with the hand or fist.  “Do” means the art or way or method.  Tae Kwon Do is the martial art style I have been involved in for 42 years and taught for over 25 years.  It implies a way of life and thinking, particularly in instilling a concept and spirit of strict self-imposed discipline and an ideal of noble moral re-armament.  The nearest description of it, it is almost a cult.

Tae Kwon Do for women is an invaluable asset in thwarting off wolves so to speak.  In all my years of instructing women’s self defense classes, there have been numerous occasions where a frail woman has defended herself successfully against her attacker.  Of course, hard training and conditioning is essential to be able to do this.  Today, through the availability of the internet, there is an enormous amount of information on Tae Kwon Do and other martial arts.  Books, videos and DVD’s are fine reading and referencing materials but they are not and should not be replaced with hard personal instruction.

When I began my training back in 1965, there were only a handful of Tae Kwon Do schools in Chicago where I grew up.  I began my Tae Kwon Do training in a YMCA on the south side of Chicago. The instructor, who was teaching there, had a school on the north side, many miles from my home.  After 6 months of training there once a week, on Saturdays, my instructor told me that if wanted to become a good practitioner of the art, I had to find a way to go to his school.  Travel time one way was one and half hours with public transportation.  I trained 5 days per week at the school and sometimes 6 days.  I was committed.  From then on, Tae Kwon Do was my life.

Fortunately, I was blessed with 3 master Korean instructors who loved to teach.  These Tae Kwon Do Instructors came at different periods throughout my training.  To this day, Tae Kwon Do is still a way of life for me that has helped me become a good family man and blessed me with good business principles.
