Step Sparring
Step Sparring is also one of the pre-requisites for promotional examinations. Step Sparring prepares the student, beginning and advanced, to familiarize himself with a variety of defensive movements. Traditionally taught, the attacker delivers one forward step with one punch, high, middle and low, and the defender will use anything in his arsenal to defend and counter the attack. These are good training practices to prepare the student for “free sparring”, where two participants engage in an actual combat “sparring” session. Step Sparring is also a confidence and coordination builder. The martial arts beginner and advanced student can apply any of the blocks, kicks, punch and strikes they have learned and apply those techniques into step sparring. The student should deliver the forward attack with authority and conviction, likewise, the defender. Good eye contact is imperative. The beginning student should always pair himself with and advanced student for step sparring, if he wishes to learn quickly and correctly. The advanced student will always correct the beginning student’s technique and give him advice. The novice beginner should not be ashamed to ask questions. He should keep his eye on the students with the best technique, and if time permits while class is in session, should approach one of those students and ask for help, even after class if the instructor permits it. With this attitude, you will be surprised how quickly you will learn techniques and execute them correctly. I certainly did. For martial arts ebooks and articles Click Here! |
