Martial Arts Blocking Techniques

As a martial arts beginner, martial arts blocking is essential in your training. Without an arsenal of martial arts blocking techniques is like falling overboard from an ocean liner without a life raft.  You will surely drown or die of the elements or eaten by a shark.   Have you ever had someone try to smack you across your face? What would be your first instinct?  Protect your face by instinctively putting your guard up. You may have not used a martial arts blocking technique but you accomplished the same goal, preventing the strike to your face.

This is a natural reflex, at least for many of us, if not most of us.  I am not going to go into counter attacks here because I want to stick to blocking techniques for a very good reason.  In my opinion, martial arts blocking is and should be one of the most essential parts the martial arts beginner must accomplish.  Humility should be part of your training. One should never attack unless provocation leaves no alternative.  Always think “blocking” first, unless you want to severely injure your attacker by counter attacking.  I’m not suggesting block and run. Every situation is different. I am not talking about any specific style on blocking because all styles teach the same fundamentals on protecting one self.

In my opinion, to correctly thwart off an attack is to deliberately and forcefully block the attack.  I mean block and block hard to create pain to your attacker.  Blocking in this manner is almost like a counter attack.  I believe that while applying these blocking techniques in this manner, your attacker will be in a painful situation, therefore, ceasing his attack.
