Martial Arts Training

If you are interested in studying the martial arts, there are several things that the martial arts beginner must understand and proceed to follow through.  Obviously, you are not aware of the multitude of styles there are, therefore, the martial arts beginner at first, will be dumbfounded and not know where to start. I will explain several “to do’s”, for the martial  arts beginner in order to embark on his journey, for a “no nonsense” approach before he starts learning the martial arts.

The Martial Arts Beginner

  1. Should visit a variety of schools before he makes up his mind to begin training.
  2. Should start looking in the phone book for addresses of schools.
  3. Should make a list of at least 6 schools and visit all of them.
  4. Should visit schools within a 10 mile radius from home because you should not have to travel a great distance to train. Your time is limited because you have a job. When you come home from work or go directly to train from work, your time is limited for travel, and classes usually begin at a reasonable time for most people when they get out of work. By the way, you must have something to eat before class. Nothing more than a light meal or sandwich because you might be throwing up in class if you eat heavy.
  5. Should decide which class in which time frame the martial arts beginner should pick. In my experience of 25 years plus in teaching, I provided two classes in the evening. The first class started at 6:30 pm and the second class at 8:00 pm. Both classes should be 1 and half hour long. The second class ends at 10 pm and now you are on your way home for bed.

Now that you have broken the groundwork for your first stage in your journey as a martial arts beginner, you now must look for certain key elements in these schools and instructors before you make up your mind where you want to train. You have to ask yourself what “benefit” am I going to receive as a martial arts beginner.

  1. Will you be required to go through strenuous exercises at the beginning of classes? If so, are you willing to go through the muscle aches while you’re being conditioned as a martial arts beginner?
  2. Will I learn at a pace where I can see results in a few weeks as a martial arts beginner?

What To Look For In Choosing A School

  1. Will the instructor allow you to watch a class before you sign any paperwork?
  2. Will the instructor require you to sign a lengthy contract before you begin your training as a martial arts beginner?
  3. While you are watching a class in progress, does the instructor run the students through conditioning before the formal training begins?  Conditioning meaning, running, sit-ups, push-ups, stretching, etc.
  4. Does the instructor keep discipline in his class? Meaning, is there talking, laughing and joking.

These are very important points at the beginning stages as a martial arts beginner.

All the ingredients above, is a step in the right direction for you to decide where you want to go. It is not a matter of what style the instructor teaches. Just because one of your friends trains in a certain school in a specific martial arts style, it doesn’t mean anything if the principles of what I have just laid out are not followed. You want to train as a martial arts beginner, anything less is unacceptable.
