A Memorable Event

One of the most exciting events that Nick Boodris remembers, was when Gen Choi visited his school in 1973 and again in 1974 when Mr. Boodris was conducting promotional exams. Although Gen Choi has passed away in 2002, he was the founder of Tae Kwon Do and continued to give lectures, visit schools and promote the art any way he could.

Choi was born on November 9, 1918 in Hwa Dae, Myong Chun District, in what is now the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Choi’s father sent him to study calligraphy under  Han Il Dong, who was also a master of Taek Kyon, the ancient art of foot fighting.

Choi combined elements of taekkyeon and karate to develop a martial art that he called Taekwon-do, which means “the way of the feet and the hands”. It was so named on April 11, 1955.
